| Artist's Note: My favorite Uncle Walter, Dad’s brother, also had excellent gardening skills. It had been Uncle Walter’s 100th birthday in January of 1989. Wanting to do something he would enjoy, I decided in August to do a painting of his garden that I had not seen for 10 years. A photo went into the mail to England so he and my family could see it. It was with shock that I got a phone call within two days that he had passed away. The photo did not get there until the morning in September when I arrived in England for his funeral. My family thought it was very strange that I had painted Winnie, my Uncle’s black cat, sitting on the high garden wall. Actually, while I was painting it, I felt forced to put that black cat in; I had no idea he had one. Winnie came to meet me as if welcoming me home, and stayed by my side the whole time. Strange indeed! Cats usually hide under the bed when I show up. |
