Artist's Note: Small village post offices in Devon often carried small items for sale other than stamps, and usual postal supplies. They could even carry eggs from nearby farms, bread, and other staple foods, and assorted sweets and chocolates. Some still do today! The postmaster or postmistress heard many local stories, of course, and were almost as close as family members in listening to lots of gossip daily!
